today i’d like to share a quick little mini album i’ve worked on for the past few days.  i took step by step photos so you can make your own, if you’d like :)  the idea is not something i came up with on my own, but rather compiled from various DIY mini albums i’ve seen all over the internet.  i hope you enjoy it!
before we get started, you will need the following supplies:
* a piece of chipboard/light cardboard the height you want your book to be (mine is 4″), and at least width + 1″ to be able to make a spine piece.
* a piece of transparency the size you want your cover (the size of your book).  alternatively you could replace this with chipboard or any other material of your choosing.
* patterned paper, 8.5″x4″ or (cover+cover+spine) size, as many sheets as you’d like.  i only used four sheets so that i could include more chunky embellishments in my book.
* additional patterned paper for covering chipboard and spine binding.
* good adhesive
* scorer, optional, but handy for this project
first off, you need to cut down your chipboard and transparency to make the covers and spine of your book.  my book is 4×4″, so i cut a 4×4″ piece of chipboard and transparency, and a 4″x.5″ piece for the spine.
next, cut a piece of “additional” patterned paper to wrap around your back cover & spine.  in my case, my paper was 4.5″ tall and about 4.75″ wide.  i left a 1/4″ margin around the outsides so i can wrap the paper around the cover, and i also left a wee bit (about 1/16″) extra on the width to help the crease at the spine.
i scored this piece 1/4″ from the top, bottom, and one side, and 1/2″+ a tad from the opposite side, to make it easier to wrap around the chipboard.  i cut out the squares formed by the score intersections to make a nice clean wrap.
(NOTE: in this picture i have only creased 3 of the 4 sides, because i cut my paper 1/4″ too short, but if you want the clean, completely wrapped look, make sure to include that extra 1/4″ on the side opposite the spine! oops!!)
and here is the back cover and spine, completed.  i used double sided tape to adhere, because i’m cheap.  i lined up the edge of the paper with the edge of the spine, and adhered the back cover along the edge of the crease at the spine.  i wrapped the overlap pieces around and since i cut 1/4″ too short the side of the cover also lines up with the paper.  i fixed it a little by cutting a 4×4″ piece of the AC POW! Glitter paper to cover:
next i cut a piece of patterned paper, 4″ tall by 1.5″ wide for the spine binding.  i scored it tall-ways at 1/2″ increments, and adhered it overlapping the back cover to the crease, then the spine, and finally added my transparency, aligning it with the opposite crease to form the entire cover.  i also ended up adding a 4×1.5″ piece to the inside to cover the ugly gaps in the binding.
now for the pages!  take the patterned paper you selected for the pages, cut to size – mine is 8.5″x4″ – but you could make it any length by adding the width of both covers + the width of the spine.  score these sheets on the side you want facing inwards at 4″ and 4.5″ to make a space for the spine.
add adhesive and layer onto the spine in the desired order.  as i said, i only used four sheets for a total of 16 pages from cover to cover.
and you’re finished!  it took me about 20 minutes total to put this together and i think it will make a great Mother’s Day gift for someone :)
at this point, feel free to go wild and embellish this little baby however you want!  last night i pulled out supplies from every Sampler kit since January that i still have left and started going to town on this one… i am not ready to share pictures yet, but will update this post when i do.
i hope this is helpful to you, if you have never seen anything like this somewhere else already!  don’t forget this month’s FANTASTIC AWESOME kit is available at  Scrapbooking Supplies R Us  along with the latest and greatest of everything right now!  you definitely don’t want to miss this kit!!!

the Sampler’s FIRST EVER BLOG HOP!!!

Author: shaunna | Filed under: Arts & Crafts

i just have a few random things i want to share today!  i hardly blog enough so i figured i might as well :)

1. my new favorite song.  “Fight to Win” by Goodie Mob

Cee-Lo Green is one of my all-time favorite people.  i loved him in Gnarls Barkley and Goodie Mob, and i love him by himself.  i also love him on The Voice.  the performance of this song was so awesome – i loved the costumes and the performance but i REALLY love this song, and i’m really excited about the Goodie Mob reunion.  i bought it from iTunes last night and i can’t wait to listen to it in my car!!

2. Jamar Rogers.

[ photo from americanidol.com ]

Jamar, if you ever read this, i want you to know that you are my hero!  thank you for being who you are, thank you for fighting, thank you for proving that someone CAN turn their life around out of drugs and make it positive.  i don’t know that that point can be any more emphasized by our generation.  everyone makes bad choices, but we need to own up to them to get through them.  Jamar is currently a contestant (and my vote to WIN!) on The Voice.  i can’t wait to hear his songs on the radio and be able to buy his original music.  his story is so powerful, he is truly a role model for anyone who has ever hit rock bottom and thought that life wasn’t worth living.  you can read more of his story, see his performances – AND VOTE FOR HIM TO WIN – on TheVoice.com

3. PRINCE HARRY HIPPO.

you just can’t tell me he’s not the cutest thing ever!  i’m obsessed, ever since i stumbled on an article about him on dailymail.co.uk …. i probably could have just done a whole post about him, he’s so sweet!  a pygmy hippo born in South Africa in an animal sanctuary back in March – Harry was rejected by his mother, who has shown no maternal instincts, so he was taken in to the shelter and receives round-the-clock care from a team of very devoted and loving caregivers.  there are currently less than 3,000 pygmy hippos left in the wild, making them a critically endangered species.  he’s just so cute!  i never thought i would say a hippopotamus was cute, but i can’t help it in this case!

4. THE SAMPLER’S FIRST-EVER BLOG HOP!!!!

we are currently transitioning over to a new blog on Blogger, and gearing up for The Sampler Kit Club’s first-ever blog hop!  THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 27 ALL DAY!  we will have a Sampling of goodies from The Sampler valued at $25-30 at each stop along the way so make sure you come out and participate!!!!  i’ll have a fun project to share with you here, and everyone else will have a special blog hop project on each blog along the way – there will be different requirements to qualify for prizes but i’m sure that it will be spectacular!  join us at The Sampler’s New Blog on Friday morning to get started ;)

well that about wraps it up for what i wanted to say!  hope to see you back on Friday!

i’m so thrilled with all the textured goodness in this kit, i have so many ideas that i really don’t know where to start!!!  but here’s something i worked on the other night while watching “Once Upon a Time” – my latest sitcom obsession.

easiest project i’ve done in a long time.  took under 30 minutes to get these all set up – that’s what i call awesome!  and they will look great as a part of the collage wall i’m doing in our foyer!

over the weekend, my best friend Ryan and I worked on a few crafty details for an Easter wedding – he made the cake while i worked on some extra unique favors inspired by this:

from Poppytalk via Pinterest

we made 37 of them.

i understand that blowing the insides of the eggs out was not a fun job but i got to skip out on that part :D

we used the Silhouette and SnapDragon Snippets’ 3-d box with flower to make all of the boxes out of cardstock.  we used Krylon glitter spray on the outsides of the eggs, and Photoshop to create little messages with the couple’s name and date that we carefully rolled and stuffed into the eggs.  filled the boxes with Easter grass and an egg apiece, then finished it off by tying the boxes shut with tulle.  overall NOT the easiest project i have undertaken but we were all very satisfied with the result – and i’m sure that they were a nice surprise for the wedding guests!  please don’t mind the shoddy photography – it was 3AM when we finished up so there wasn’t much light to work with!

!!!

lots of work!

and i have to take a second to brag on my best friend here – this boy has never had a cake lesson or class in his life, and he put together the most beautiful wedding cake!  i’m so proud of him :)

congratulations to the happy couple!!!  we were so proud and excited to work on this for them :)  and congrats to my best friend Ryan and his boyfriend Kris for putting together this amazing wedding from start to finish!  everything turned out so beautiful :)

well, i’ll be back later in the week with more to share!  be sure to check in with The Sampler’s blog each day for more updates and great inspiration from The Sampler’s amazing team.  thanks for visiting!

The Sampler April 2011 kit!

Author: shaunna | Filed under: Arts & Crafts

:/

i kind of suck at blogging.  if you’ve ever gone through my blog history you will know there are just periods where i stop writing stuff.  i guess those are the times when life catches up with me, and i prefer not to be overwhelmed so some things just end up falling by the wayside.  blogging is always one of those.  so my sincerest apologies to those who visit regularly, i have just had a lot of craziness going on lately.

now on to the updates!  yay!  lots of stuff has been going on around here…

1. PROJECTS

i have worked on a few things for The Sampler using this month’s kit.  i really love the kit – very boyish but still very versatile.  there’s a lot of goodies from the American Crafts “Chap” line, which i am in love with and would love to have more of.

“miss u” card – The Sampler March Card Challenge

The Sampler is running a card challenge through April 19th at 11:59PM EST, and this month we are featuring a sketch from PageMaps as the inspiration for the challenge.  head over to The Sampler’s blog for more info, the sketch, and our inspiration for you.  a prize pack from The Sampler is at stake, so don’t miss out!

“slip & slidin’” – The Sampler March Sketch challenge

our two oldest, and my youngest cousin.  i hate the fact that i don’t journal because i could share so much about this event. ::sigh::  maybe i should just write it on the back.  our oldest (my stepdaughter) had never played on a slip-n-slide before because in Texas, at least where we live, there isn’t really room in your yard to do this.  i mean, our backyard is literally like the size of a small animal enclosure.  so when we visited Ohio last summer, my uncle got this out for them and they had such a blast!  i actually had fun taking the pictures, too, a bit scary at times but i got a TON of really amazing shots.  i made an 8.5×11″ version of this month’s sketch, which you can see over at The Sampler’s blog, as well as enter for your chance to win a prize pack from The Sampler!  the deadline is also April 19th at 11:59PM EST, so you’ve still got a bit of time!  love to see other takes on this sketch – it’s a really interesting sketch to work with!

Kellan’s shadowbox – The Sampler March kit

i couldn’t resist these die cuts for the Silhouette as soon as they came out!!!!  i had to make one!!!!!  Lori Whitlock has been releasing some fantastic 3D die cuts lately, among them this cute 3D shadowbox (8×10 version).  she has a really great series of videos on her YouTube page as well, that guides you through the process of assembling, which i found to be very simple thanks to those videos.  about 97% of this stuff is The Sampler’s March kit, minus the truck, sailboat, yo-yo, felt corners & red heart.  there are other pieces that came from The Sampler’s January kit as well.  i really love how it turned out – but i need to get a bigger easel for it!

2.  Tattooed.  Again.

just randomly.  i’ve wanted to get it put on me somewhere for a while, so it’s on my right wrist opposite the stars on my left wrist.  it was pretty awesome.  courtesy of Ink Pit Tattoo on Beach Street in Ft. Worth.

3.  Reading List.

figured i could update this as i go along.  i have polished off three of the books from my “100 Books to Read Before i Die” list.  and really, thoroughly enjoyed all three of them despite the fact that i would probably have never selected them if i weren’t sticking to my list of “classics”.  i’m glad that i read them!

“Pride & Prejudice” by Jane Austen

okay, i admit it.  sometimes i try to put off a tough chick exterior, but i’m completely a sap for this kind of stuff.  i just hate to admit it!  this book was so awesome, i’m telling you, if you like to read books and haven’t read this book, put it on your list!  this is my type of romance novel – i love how gritty Eliza is, i really can relate to her character a lot, and i find myself falling in love with Mr. Darcy in about the same fashion that she does.  i also have to say that the dad is my favorite character… but i’ll just leave you to it!

“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens

i know that March seems a pretty weird time to read this, but i thought, why not?  a good way to bring Dickens into my book world.  i learned pretty quickly that i know this book almost word for word, despite the fact that i’ve never read it but seen so many movie versions that don’t leave any piece of this out, so i wasn’t surprised a bit by anything.  it was pretty fun to read, though, it’s a lot different reading a story then watching a movie, and i liked how this was pretty short and light throughout so it was a really easy read.

“Around the World in 80 Days” by Jules Verne

LOVED IT.  so much.  i was actually pretty sad when i finished it last night.  i loved all the characters, and it was a really crazy interesting story with lots of twists and turns, and i was always thinking “what’s next?”  this book wasn’t originally on my list, but it was one that i considered a “classic” that should have been on my list when i was browsing the free books, so i settled on it immediately.  glad i did.  it was fantastic.  – BFF SHANNON:  you really should read it!  you will def like it!!!

i started on “The Scarlet Letter” last night, but… well… i’m sure it’s a good book, but it’s really depressing so far, and i passed out reading it.  i think i might take a break from the list for a while and read the “Hunger Games” series, since everyone is raving about it.  i hate falling into those trends.  but i’ll give it a shot.

one more thing before i take off…

“droids in love”

i haven’t been crocheting a lot lately, these have actually been done for a while… just kept forgetting to take pics of them!  made the Artooie for Travis for Valentines/celebrating his new office, so he could add it to his collection of crocheted guys i have made for him.  then i got the idea to change up the colors and made the pink one – she’s really cute ;)  (and mine!)  i have a few more of these in the pipeline that i would like to do, just need to stop creating more projects for myself!  the pattern is FREE, by the way, which is really awesome, courtesy of Penelope Senior @ peneknitcrochet !!!

besides the fact that Game of Thrones has started back up again (YESSSS!) i have nothing else really exciting to report for now.  but i’ll be back later in the week with more to share, i’m sure, i know i always say that but i’m definitely going to try ;)  have a great day, and thanks for stopping by!
