another big announcement for me!!  i have been selected to join an amazing group of ladies as part of a new card challenge blog called “The Perfect Sentiment“!!!!!  so excited :)  it’s a really great group so far, and i can’t wait to get to know the other ladies better and start making some AMAZING cards for their challenges!

there will be weekly challenges – with a twist – to get you thinking outside the box a little instead of making the same old cards all the time!  you will definitely have to check out the first challenge, which goes live really soon!  i will update as soon as i know more!!!

i’m really grateful to Jennipher (the coordinator) for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such an awesome team – i can always use fresh new ideas for my cards and this sounded like the perfect opportunity for that!  the other designers are all so fantastic – it will be really cool to see everyone’s takes on the challenges and hopefully we will all be able to inspire you to create some really beautiful cards that you can actually use ;)

more info to come soon!  hope that you will come over and check out the first challenge when it goes live – it will be a lot of fun :)

hi everyone!  the Paper Lovelies kit for October was released on Friday the 23rd this month, since the 25th fell on a Sunday, but i wanted to take a minute to post about this month’s kit, though, and share my creations with you all :)  i would have posted on Friday, but we had an EXTREMELY busy weekend – today is my hubby’s 40th birthday, and we threw a HUGE surprise party for him Friday night so the weekend has literally been a blur for us… it’s such hard work putting something like that together, and then cleaning up after!!!

we got to work with Graphic 45′s “An ABC Primer” this month – really fun!!!  i have always just admired Graphic 45 from afar, since i always end up buying this kind of vintagey stuff and then never really using it… but fortunately since I’m working with Paper Lovelies, i get to try it out anyway and see how far i can expand my creative borders!  it was really hard to decide what to do with this kit since it has so many fun elements – the paper, the glitter, the tulle – i couldn’t believe all the goodies that this kit came with!  i wanted to be able to use them all on every project :)

here are all of the goodies you get with this fantastic kit:

  • 1 sheet each double-sided Patterned Paper from Graphic 45 “An ABC Primer” – Games & Playtime, Alphabet Soup, Jumping Joan, Grammar School, Happy Go Lucky, Building Blocks, Bedtime Stories, The Three R’s, School Days, ABC Primer, Calico Kids, 1 2 Buckle My Shoe
  • 2 sheets Core’dinations / Jenni Bowlin Cardstock (varies)
  • 1 Pink Paislee Pixee Stix Glitter (butterscotch)
  • 16″ Maya Arts tulle (black/gold)
  • 1 6-pk Kaisercraft Ribbon (red)
  • 4 Jenni Bowlin chipboard buttons
  • 12 mini Flora Doodles (black/red)
  • Alphabet Stickers (gold)

i managed to come up with two cards and a {bonus} bookmark, since this kit is just dying to be used for something book related!  so, here’s what i came up with:

i really love these projects!  this kit was really fun to work with, and would be great for someone wanting to scrap back-to-school pics or make cards/gifts for teachers!  you can see more examples of the Design Team’s work HERE.  we had Lisa Wilkinson joining us this month as a guest designer, and she really rocked this kit!

well, i have to get back to my busy-ness (read: still cleaning my house! there was literally confetti on every surface in the downstairs!)  hope that everyone had a great weekend, and definitely get over to Paper Lovelies to check out the kit before they’re all gone!!!!!  thanks for stopping by :)

Paper Lovelies Oct. 2011 kit!

so… i was just thinking about how much i suck at blogging.

like REALLY.

i’ve had the same browser tab open for 24 hours with the same text in a post that kept autosaving all day.  and i didn’t like it one bit.  there was not one point today when i could just sit down and words would just start coming out of my brain that didn’t sound like a cheeseball, sales pitchy, uber-happy, fakey repetitive overuse of affirmation and excitement.   nope.  nada.  non.  FAIL.  instead, i said, “since the very first time i saw one of those 7gypsies photo trays i’ve been all over it!!!”  like what, gravy on taters?   psh.  that thing has been on a shelf since June.  i’ve been wayyy too busy pinning ideas for it on Pinterest.  but i finally got to that point where i’d had all i could take of my laptop and i was starting to get a nervous twitch on my right side from a lack of doing something crafty.

i resolved to do the photo tray, after a long period of looking over others’ photo trays and pinning them, then getting sidetracked by reorganizing my Pins, and then remembering that i was sick of the computer and that i had intended to sit at my craft table and DO SOMETHING… so, i didn’t get the fancy 7gypsies one that i had my eye on (i really want one of the Printers’ Letterblock Trays with the various sized boxes!!!) … i got the Hobby Lobby version that was 50% off back in June instead.  no complaints, though!  as far as i can tell the only difference is the orientation of the photos – which worked out great for me because i tend to take more wide shots than long ones, and i generally prefer a horizontal canvas over a vertical one.  no idea why, seems like more space to me, even when it’s the same size either way!  (digress).  after a brief announcement that i was going to sit in my space and should anyone further prefer my company they would have to come along, i marched in and set up shop.

i decided to go with a vintagey-retroish theme, since that stuff is all the rage these days.  i don’t generally work with “shabby”or “vintage” … i tend to lean toward “loud” or “rainbowy” … but lately as i’ve been working with Paper Lovelies and perusing the latest products, i find myself being more and more attracted to the styles of Cosmo Cricket, October Afternoon, My Mind’s Eye, Echo Park… i could go on {and on}.  i’ve definitely been expanding my palette lately and LOVING it.  i find myself being drawn to the trendy mixture of turquoise/aqua and a bright color like yellow or red, and lots of greys and raw browns, or shamelessly ogling chevrons and floral patterns and vintage ephemera.  it’s therapeutically nostalgic for some reason.  the first thing i did was decide on a theme and what pictures i was going to use.  i ended up only using one – my favorite recent picture of Travis and I.  since it was a very contrasty black & white photo, i shuffled it into Photoshop real quick and ran an antiquing action over it to give it more of a brownish-yellowy tint to match the theme.  i then spent about two hours rummaging around in my personal craft store, picking out papers and digging out all the stickers and embellishments i thought i might want to use for this project.  keys, wings, hearts, flowers… anything i could find that had a vintagey look to it.  i spread out some papers i’ve been dying to work with and decided on the six that would look best together as backgrounds for the trays, then took a deep breath and started cutting.

and that’s what ended up happening.  i will spare all the gory details.  i couldn’t for the LIFE of me seem to get a good picture of it, though.  sunlight or no, and several different backdrops, none seemed to do this justice.  the closeup shots turned out a lot better than the whole picture!

*I* think it’s pretty sick, actually.  well… i mean… i think i could have done better but i still really like it.  after i had about 75% of it done i thought maybe i should have tried to deck it out with a little more – like layers or something.  i had to give up on that idea, though, since most everything was already stuck down and i was really showcasing some of those papers, i felt like they were too pretty to just cover up!  i really loved working on this, though.  i got to use a lot of supplies that i was hanging onto for an “exclusive project”, which was pretty gratifying since i got to use a whole bunch of stuff i like a lot on one project!  i would definitely be open to making another one of these sometime – who knows, maybe i’ll finally get the 7gypsies Printers’ Tray before it’s sold out and gone forever ;)   thanks for stopping by!

because you could save 50 lives with it.

our church’s youth group, Elevate, is raising money to build an orphanage in Andhra Pradesh, India, for 50 kids who don’t have a place to call home.  and not only will these kids get a roof over their heads – your $15 could also help provide them with food, clothing and a great education.  think on it for a minute.  there are literally 20 MILLION orphans in India – that’s a LOT.  these kids sleep on the streets or in pigsties, wherever they can find shelter from the dark and cold; they are lucky to have a meal of rice every few days and clean water to drink.  some go naked, others wear rags.  some are faced with the challenge of not only caring for themselves, but making sure that a younger sibling is cared for as well.  they never know the love of a parent or grandparent, even sometimes friends are hard to come by.  each day of their lives is a struggle just to get their needs met and survive.  i can’t imagine how lonely that could get.

when i say our youth are seeking to build an orphanage it’s almost an understatement.  we BELIEVE that our youth have been called not to build just one orphanage for these children, but that we will be able to raise funds to build several orphanages and get some of these kids off the streets.  we BELIEVE that God has something planned for these kids in India.  we BELIEVE that our students can witness to kids half a world away and that many of them will come to know Jesus through this outstretched hand – they will find peace, love and joy in their hearts, and some for the first time in their entire lives.

we really need your help!  if you have just $15, we can make it happen.  no starbucks for a week?  skip that meal at McDonalds – your $15 can feed a child, clothe them, give them a bed to sleep in, in a warm place, with a roof over their head, and give them a wonderful education and the opportunity to have a relationship with Jesus… i mean, i thought i was a bargain shopper but i’ve never thought $15 could buy so much.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16
